Manchester United fall to Wrexham in pre-season friendly
Manchester United suffered a 1-0 defeat to Wrexham in a pre-season friendly, with Andrey Santos making his debut after joining from Chelsea for £50 million, reports BritPanorama.
Wrexham took the lead in the 39th minute through Sam Smith, whose close-range finish came against the run of play after the ball deflected through Harry Maguire’s legs, leaving Smith unmarked at the back post.
The second half featured a youthful United side under the captaincy of Tyler Fletcher, but they could not find an equaliser. Wrexham nearly doubled their advantage had it not been for reserve goalkeeper Radek Vitek, who produced an impressive save to deny Davis Keillor-Dunn after a well-placed pass.
Joshua Zirkzee almost responded for United with a powerful shot that narrowly missed the target while Mason Mount’s corner was inadvertently headed onto the crossbar by Smith. Manager Michael Carrick emphasized the importance of getting through the fixture without injuries, highlighting the squad’s limited training time together.
In his post-match comments, Carrick remarked, “It was about getting through today to be honest and looking for some positives… no injuries, so we can move on again and take the next step going into the next game next week.”
He noted that players returning from the World Cup will enhance the squad, adding, “The squad will get stronger and stronger as we get closer to the season.” With a season approaching, the vigilante of form and fitness begins to loom, reminding supporters that even familiar teams can find themselves searching for cohesion amid transition.
