Training chaos at Wolves over Arokodare standoff
An EFL club’s preparations for the new season reportedly descended into chaos after a training session was called off when a player allegedly refused to leave the pitch following a confrontation with his manager, reports BritPanorama.
Wolves had to abandon Monday’s training session as striker Tolu Arokodare reportedly ignored instructions to vacate the training field after being informed he would not be part of the first-team squad.
Local reporter Nathan Judah noted that the situation escalated, prompting the club to bring in additional security to their Compton Park training ground due to concerns that the 25-year-old might attempt to rejoin senior training.
The confrontation is said to have arisen during a discussion with new head coach Cesar Peixoto, who conveyed to Arokodare that he would not be included in the first-team group going forward.
Instead of leaving, the Nigerian forward allegedly chose to stay on the pitch, leading to the cancellation of the day’s session. Arokodare is not expected to join the squad for Tuesday’s pre-season friendly against Maidenhead as uncertainty surrounds his future.
The striker has drawn interest from Serie A clubs Fiorentina and Genoa following Wolves’ relegation from the Premier League last season.
This incident is not the first controversy involving Arokodare; he was previously reported to have been involved in a physical altercation with teammate Mateus Mane after Wolves’ defeat to West Ham in April, adding to a challenging period for the player.
Peixoto, who took over from Rob Edwards after arriving from Portuguese side Gil Vicente in June, emphasized the importance of discipline and intensity in his coaching approach. “Firstly, I’m a very demanding coach,” he stated. “I want us to work as a team and build a good environment. This is important to me, but I know very well what I want from the team.”
The reported incident also occurs amid increasing scrutiny on how clubs manage players who are excluded from first-team plans. New FIFA regulations implemented in June prohibit clubs from isolating players solely to pressure them into leaving, unless justified by genuine sporting reasons.
The rules, which were established in collaboration with global players’ union FIFPRO, are aimed at tackling abusive practices that have drawn criticism in several high-profile cases across European football. Clubs found to have improperly excluded players from first-team training could face financial or sporting penalties, making these disputes increasingly sensitive.
