Wesley Fofana faces court after tenth motoring conviction

Chelsea centre-back Wesley Fofana has been branded a “habitual offender” by a magistrate after receiving his tenth motoring conviction, reports BritPanorama.

The 25-year-old French defender was clocked travelling at 54mph in a 40mph zone on the A316 Chertsey Road in Twickenham, West London, shortly after 1.30am on 27 February 2024.

Fofana was driving his £300,000 white Rolls Royce Cullinan when an automatic speed camera captured the offence. Magistrate Alan Jefferson told Lavender Hill Magistrates’ Court: “It’s obvious that he’s a habitual offender.”

Fofana, who did not attend the hearing, admitted one count of speeding and was ordered to pay a total of £1,062 alongside three penalty points. Prosecutor Kari Williamson informed the court that Fofana was already disqualified from driving and held a non-UK licence.

Moreover, he is disqualified until May 13, 2027, due to a previous dangerous driving offence. The defender’s solicitor, Stephen Oldham, noted that Fofana had previously appeared before magistrates in May last year, where he received a two-year ban for accumulating 47 points on his record.

Oldham explained that this recent speeding incident was recorded just weeks after a serious previous offence. Fofana has made headlines for more than just speeding; his *driving history* includes striking EastEnders actor Dean Gaffney in 2024, which left Gaffney with a broken collarbone after being hit by Fofana’s Lamborghini on the King’s Road in Chelsea. Gaffney was “catapulted” into the air during the collision, but Fofana was not deemed at fault and passed a breathalyser test at the scene.

The defender joined Chelsea from Leicester City in 2022 for £70 million on a seven-year contract, having contributed to the Foxes’ FA Cup victory in 2021. However, persistent injuries, including an ACL tear and hamstring surgery, have limited his appearances this campaign to just ten in the Premier League.

In October 2023, Fofana avoided a custodial sentence after admitting to dangerous driving following an incident where he overtook on a motorway hard shoulder in Surrey while driving his white Lamborghini Urus. He was sentenced to 300 hours of unpaid community service and received an 18-month driving ban, although he was already prohibited from driving until 2027.

The recent fine comprised a £666 fine, a £266 surcharge and £130 in court costs, adding to his already significant penalties. Last year, magistrates at Lavender Hill imposed an extensive fine on him amounting to £7,569 and 38 penalty points for eight separate speeding offences involving his luxury vehicles, including his Rolls Royce, Lamborghini and a £100,000 Audi.

The series of incidents raises questions about the responsibilities of high-profile athletes on the road, highlighting the challenge of accountability even for those in privileged positions.
