Tyson Fury downplays Anthony Joshua's strategy of consulting estranged uncle before heavyweight bout

Tyson Fury brushes off Anthony Joshua’s family connections ahead of December fight

Tyson Fury has brushed off Anthony Joshua’s decision to seek advice from his estranged uncle Peter ahead of their heavyweight showdown in Cardiff, reports BritPanorama.

The Gypsy King expressed little concern over Joshua’s revelation during a London press conference, where the former champion discussed his preparations and the role of key figures from Fury’s past.

“Not to worry,” Fury said, adding, “I haven’t spoken to him for years.” His remarks followed Joshua’s mention of working with former Fury trainer Ben Davison in the lead-up to their long-anticipated fight, scheduled for December 11.

The involvement of Peter adds a personal layer to a rivalry that has captivated British boxing enthusiasts. Joshua noted that his discussions with Peter focus on training strategies rather than insider information on Fury’s tactics.

Despite the familial subplot, Fury remained dismissive of the significance behind Joshua’s preparations. “Ben’s pinpointing details which will make the difference on the night,” Joshua explained, to which Fury retorted, “Ben can’t put muscles on that suspect chin.” Such exchanges contributed to a lively press conference atmosphere, contrasting the tension some expected.

Fury showed confidence in the bout’s potential scale, declaring it “probably the greatest fight boxing’s ever seen if you factor in the commercial aspect.” Joshua echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of performing in front of British fans. “Both of us want to do British boxing proud,” he stated.

Promoter Eddie Hearn revealed that Joshua had accepted a significant pay cut to ensure the fight remained in the UK, as New York was initially considered as a venue. The financial considerations sparked additional discussions, particularly regarding Joshua’s connection to Peter and his reliance on Davison’s insights.

Fury’s demeanor appeared relaxed despite the developments, with little indication that Joshua’s preparations had shaken his confidence. Their face-off concluded on a friendly note, marked by friendly smiles rather than hostility.

In an unexpected twist, Fury even suggested a post-fight drink, inviting Joshua for “a pint of Guinness as soon as the fight’s over, win, lose or draw.” This gesture underlined the complex, sometimes cordial, nature of rivalry, reminding boxing fans that, amid the fierce competition, camaraderie also exists.
