Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister sparks controversy with social media post
Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister has escalated the fallout from his Portugal walkout by endorsing a social media post claiming the country’s people deserve a return to footballing “mediocrity,” reports BritPanorama.
Elma Aveiro shared the message on her Instagram story after the 41-year-old left the national team camp amid tensions with manager Jorge Jesus. The post criticized Portugal’s football authorities, the media, and the public, while also expressing gratitude to Ronaldo for his contributions to the national side.
“The national team deserved better structuring. The Portuguese press deserved more competence and fewer guesses,” the post stated. It continued, expressing a lack of faith in the Portuguese populace: “As for the Portuguese… well, they don’t deserve the best in anything. We are envious, contemptuous, ignorant, and we deserve to return to the mediocrity we always had in football before CR7. Thank you for everything CR7!” Aveiro concluded her message with an endorsement: “Everything has been said.”
Her comments emerge as Ronaldo’s international future hangs in the balance following his departure before Portugal’s Nations League clash against Denmark. The controversy began after he was an unused substitute during the country’s 2-1 victory over Norway despite warming up for a potential appearance. He subsequently missed three consecutive training sessions before announcing his departure from the squad.
Spanish journalist Edu Aguirre, a friend of Ronaldo, alleged that the forward felt “betrayed” by the manager due to the way the situation was handled. Aguirre stated that Jesus had apologized during a private meeting involving Ronaldo and the Portuguese Football Federation president but failed to follow through with a public acknowledgment of mishandling the situation. “That’s why Cristiano explodes, because he feels betrayed,” Aguirre remarked.
Despite the media uproar, Jesus dismissed any suggestion of a dispute, stating, “There was no incident whatsoever.” He acknowledged Ronaldo’s frustration for warming up without playing but defended his decision to keep Ronaldo on the bench, asserting, “It’s nothing to make a fuss about. If I need him, he’ll come on. If I don’t need him, he won’t.”
Following his exit, Ronaldo issued a statement linking his departure to the manager’s press conference and his conversation with the federation president, hinting that he would eventually clarify the circumstances surrounding his exit. He expressed his dedication to the national team, wishing his teammates luck, while the federation confirmed that preparations would continue with the remaining players.
This episode serves as a potent reminder of the pressures and complexities surrounding elite international football, illustrating how quickly loyalty can be tested within the sporting hierarchy — and the fine line players tread between personal conviction and team obligations.
