Tuchel’s England future uncertain ahead of World Cup
Thomas Tuchel has been given no guarantees over his long-term England future after Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham confirmed the head coach’s contract contains performance clauses ahead of Wednesday’s World Cup opener with Croatia, reports BritPanorama.
The German only recently extended his deal through to Euro 2028 after impressing FA chiefs during his first months in charge.
However, Bullingham stopped short of offering an unconditional commitment to Tuchel regardless of how England perform in the United States this summer. The timing of the revelation is notable, coming just a day before England begin their World Cup campaign against Croatia in Dallas.
Tuchel was initially appointed on an 18-month contract that would have expired at the conclusion of this tournament. But after overseeing a flawless qualification campaign and earning praise behind the scenes, the former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss agreed fresh terms that will keep him in charge through to the next European Championship. Despite that extension, Bullingham admitted there are mechanisms in place should England fail to meet expectations.
Asked whether the FA was protected if the World Cup campaign ends in disappointment, he replied: “There’s performance clauses in every single contract with the FA, but I’m not going to go into any detail on what they are.”
The comments immediately raise fresh questions over what England must achieve in North America to ensure Tuchel remains at the helm. Bullingham, however, insisted the governing body remains fully committed to the 52-year-old.
“I think he could always get approaches,” he said. “That’s a reality of any top performer in any walk of life.” Bullingham also revealed one of the reasons behind agreeing a new deal before the tournament was to remove uncertainty surrounding Tuchel’s future.
“You never really want that hanging over you when you go into a tournament because obviously anyone in any walk of life that’s on a fixed-term contract when they get to the end of it starts thinking about their future,” he explained.
The FA chief refused to define what would constitute success or failure at the World Cup, arguing that tournament football is too unpredictable for simple targets to be set. “We have a manager who we think is doing a really good job,” he said.
If England were to win, Bullingham noted, they are not in a position where they want anything other than Tuchel to coach them into 2028. “He’s very happy with us. We’re very happy with him. I don’t see it as a risk,” he added.
Bullingham pointed to Gareth Southgate’s time in charge as evidence that tournament results alone do not always tell the full story. Factors such as performances, opposition, injuries, and the atmosphere within the camp are all included in the FA’s post-tournament review process.
The FA chief praised Tuchel’s impact since arriving at St George’s Park, describing the England manager as a charismatic figure who has quickly established authority within the squad, with Bullingham stating, “The energy and charisma he brings is amazing. He’s incredibly dynamic and energetic but he absolutely owns the room and owns the camp.”
As the countdown to the opening match ticks down, the shadows of expectation loom large, with the national team’s ambitions resting on the tactical acumen of a manager who must now navigate both opportunity and uncertainty as England embarks on its World Cup journey.
