Thomas Tuchel reflects on England’s World Cup semi-final defeat
Thomas Tuchel has admitted England’s agonising World Cup semi-final defeat by Argentina will remain a permanent “scar” after defending the tactical decisions that preceded their dramatic collapse, reports BritPanorama.
The Three Lions appeared destined to reach their first final since 1966 when Anthony Gordon fired them ahead in the 55th minute. Yet, Enzo Fernandez equalised with just five minutes remaining before Lautaro Martinez struck in stoppage time to complete a devastating Argentina comeback.
Tuchel faced intense criticism after responding to mounting pressure by replacing an attacking player with Ezri Konsa and switching England to a back five with 19 minutes left. Defenders Dan Burn and Nico O’Reilly were subsequently introduced as England retreated and allowed Argentina to seize control.
Speaking to former Three Lions striker Daniel Sturridge in the FA documentary Reflections: England’s World Cup Journey, Tuchel admitted his side adopted a survival mentality far too early. He pinpointed Djed Spence’s desperate sliding tackle to halt one Argentina attack as the moment England’s approach changed.
“It did something to me,” Tuchel said. “It did maybe something to the players, and we suddenly shifted into a mindset of, ‘Let’s just overcome it.’ We played like there were four minutes left, but it was actually 30 or 40 minutes left to play.”
Tuchel conceded England stopped using possession to relieve the pressure and failed to play through Argentina’s aggressive press. Lionel Messi and his team-mates then threw players forward as they desperately chased an equaliser, with Tuchel describing their approach as “f*** it football.”
“They played two wingers, two strikers and Messi,” he explained. “At some point, they played 3-1-6, and we struggled.”
The German insisted his decision to change formation was influenced by England’s successful use of a back five during their knockout victories over Mexico and Norway. Tuchel feared his team were merely waiting to concede after Argentina created another major opportunity shortly before the water break.
“We didn’t have ball possession,” he said. “We weren’t defending properly in our 4-4-2. We needed help.” With Argentina relying heavily on crosses and committing four forwards to their attacking line, Tuchel believed an additional centre-back would provide the necessary protection.
However, the move backfired spectacularly as England surrendered their lead and crashed out in the cruellest circumstances. Tuchel maintained that nobody could know whether a more adventurous approach would have produced a different result.
“That was just my solution to the problem,” he said. “I tried to help. You don’t try to implement anything for your ego.” Tuchel also revealed the emotional toll of the defeat, insisting nobody had been more desperate to reach the final.
“It’s my scar,” he added. “I have to live with it. I am in charge here and I take these decisions. No one is more hurt than me. No one wanted it more. You can endlessly torture yourself and think that, with a different substitution, we would have won. You just don’t know.”
Tuchel must now turn his attention towards England’s Nations League campaign, with fixtures against the Czech Republic, Spain and Croatia approaching. He will announce his first squad since the World Cup heartbreak on Friday morning.
As the dust settles on this disappointment, the challenge ahead feels steep, reminding supporters of how fleeting success can be on football’s grandest stage.
