The Open opts out of showing World Cup final
The Open has made its decision on showing the World Cup as Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler target major championship glory, reports BritPanorama.
The tournament at Royal Birkdale in Southport, Merseyside, begins on Thursday, coinciding with the World Cup final scheduled for Sunday. Organisers have confirmed that no football will be broadcast during the prestigious event, meaning fans will not be able to watch the World Cup final, which could feature England.
The Three Lions face Argentina in their semi-final tonight, with the winner set to compete against Spain on Sunday. While the scheduling clash poses a challenge, broadcasters are still in discussion regarding potential adjustments.
There is a risk of overlapping timings between the Open’s final round and the 8pm kick-off in New York, which may necessitate moving tee times forward. R&A CEO Mark Darbon stated, “At this stage, no plans to alter anything, but we’ll finalise our plans after the semi-final.” The leading group generally schedules to tee off at around 2:30pm, allowing time for any possible play-off.
McIlroy is set to tee off his first round at 3:15pm alongside world No 3 Matt Fitzpatrick and the 2024 champion, Xander Schauffele. Scheffler, the world No. 1 and defending champion, will play alongside fellow American Bryson DeChambeau after suffering his first missed cut in 78 tournaments last weekend at the Scottish Open. The pair will be joined by England’s Tyrrell Hatton, who tees off on Thursday at 9:58am.
As the excitement builds, Tommy Fleetwood aims for his first major title paired with Jon Rahm and American Jordan Spieth, who won The Open the last time it was held at Royal Birkdale in 2017. Meanwhile, local member Matthew Baldwin will hit the first shot of the competition at 6:35am.
In the realm of sport, narratives intertwine and outcomes can shift unexpectedly, highlighting the delicate balance that athletes navigate as they pursue glory amidst clashing schedules and fan expectations.
