Steve Davis transforms from snooker champion to respected DJ
Steve Davis, a six-time world champion and a dominant figure in snooker, has undergone a remarkable transformation since retiring from the sport in 2016, now earning acclaim as a DJ and musician, reports BritPanorama.
The 67-year-old, who hailed from London and reached eight World Championship finals, is now performing across the UK. He has amassed over 10,000 vinyl records and identifies as a dedicated fan of progressive rock.
Following his retirement from professional snooker, Davis collaborated with musician Kavus Torabi to form the electro group Utopia Strong, releasing two albums. His musical endeavors have seen him perform at notable events such as the Glastonbury Festival and support Blur at Wembley Stadium. Most recently, he took on the role of curator for the 2025 Simple Things Festival in Bristol, where he organised the festival lineup.
Davis’s unexpected transition into the music scene has caught many fans by surprise. He noted, “I didn’t know my life would turn out like this. You haven’t got a clue. My life seems to have gone in reverse,” expressing how his journey from rigorous snooker practice to DJing at major festivals has reshaped his outlook. He added: “Music is my drug of choice.”
Notably, this is not his first engagement with music; he hosted a soul and rock show on Brentwood’s Phoenix FM since 1996 and participated in the Matchroom Mob’s “Snooker Loopy” collaboration with Chas and Dave. The contrast between his past and current career has led to astonishment among festival-goers who had initially been unaware of his dual career.
In a reflective moment, Davis commented on how unexpected his path has been, illustrating the unpredictability of life choices. He has also made headlines regarding his personal life, particularly an affair that surfaced in the mid-1990s, which he downplayed, stating, “I wasn’t a politician, I was a snooker player.” After marrying Judy Greig in 1990 and raising two sons, the couple eventually divorced in 2005. He is currently in a long-term relationship with Jeannie Nash.
As Davis merges the worlds of snooker and music, it serves as a reminder of the diverse paths a life can take, where one might not expect to see a former champion of the baize commanding the decks at Glastonbury.
