Manchester United pays tribute to fallen officer during match

The two young sons of PC Matthew Blades walked with the Manchester United squad onto the pitch at Old Trafford this afternoon, serving as mascots for the Premier League fixture against Ipswich Town, reports BritPanorama.

The club also honoured the fallen officer in today’s match programme, describing him as “a proud Red, a devoted family man and a police officer who dedicated his life to helping others.”

PC Blades was a devoted supporter who regularly attended matches at Old Trafford. His widow and their children were present at the ground for this afternoon’s game. United said they had learned of the officer’s death “with great sadness.”

PC Blades and fellow officer PC Tom Clough lost their lives on 22 August when their police vehicle was struck head-on by a car travelling in the wrong direction on the A66 near Middlesbrough. All five occupants of the other vehicle, a Passat, were also killed in the collision.

The deceased were named as Michael Robert Cahill, 23, Jacob Matusiak, 23, Makai Saddington, 18, Theo Rae, 17, and Cole Robert Worthy, 17.

The investigation into the crash has gathered pace this week, with 17 further arrests bringing the total number of individuals detained in connection with the incident to 24. Tributes to both officers extended beyond Old Trafford over the weekend.

At the Riverside Stadium on Saturday, Middlesbrough’s Championship clash with West Bromwich Albion was preceded by a minute’s applause in honour of PC Blades and PC Clough, with images of the two men displayed on the big screen. Supporters also gathered at Seaton Carew FC’s fixture against FC Hartlepool to pay their respects. PC Blades had served as a junior football coach at both clubs, underlining the breadth of his commitment to his local community beyond his duties in uniform.

As football unites to honour a local hero, the impact of such tragedies lingers—reminding us of the fragility of life and the dedication of those who serve to protect. The beautiful game continues, but the memories of PC Blades and PC Clough remain close to the hearts of many.
