Sir Billy Boston, the trailblazing Wales and Great Britain rugby league legend, has died at the age of 92, reports BritPanorama.
Boston passed away peacefully in hospital in his adopted hometown of Wigan, four days after the funeral of Lady Joan, his wife of 70 years.
His passing is significant not only for the rugby community but also for the history of sport in the UK. Recognised for his remarkable contributions, he became the first rugby league player to receive a knighthood when honoured by King Charles last year.
The Welsh Rugby Union confirmed his death with a tribute, noting, “Sir Billy Boston, one of the best loved and most iconic figures in the history of Welsh sport, has passed away peacefully at the age of 92.” The statement highlighted his roots in Tiger Bay and his enduring legacy in Wigan, where he lived for over seven decades.
Boston’s incredible career began with rugby union before he switched to league, joining Wigan in 1953. Over 15 years, he established himself as a phenomenon, amassing 478 tries in 488 appearances, a club record that remains unbeaten. His contribution to rugby league was further commemorated with a statue in Wigan and recognition at the rugby league monument outside Wembley Stadium.
Not just a club player, Boston represented Great Britain 31 times, helping secure victory in the Rugby League World Cup in 1960. His achievements carried profound significance, transcending sport as he navigated the challenges of racial prejudice, becoming one of Britain’s first black sporting superstars.
In 2025, he was finally knighted, a recognition Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described as correcting a long-standing injustice within the sport. Wigan chairman Chris Brookes expressed his pride, stating, “I am absolutely delighted and so happy that Billy – and rugby league – has finally received the ultimate recognition his stellar career deserves.”
