Shearer suggests playing Declan Rice at right-back amid England's injury challenges

Alan Shearer suggests Declan Rice for right-back role

Former England striker Alan Shearer has suggested Thomas Tuchel start Declan Rice at right back for their upcoming match, reports BritPanorama.

This recommendation follows Rice’s performance in the latter stages of the Three Lions’ last 32 clash against DR Congo, where he filled a defensive role as Tuchel opted for a more attacking strategy. The move proved effective, contributing to Harry Kane’s two goals that secured England’s progression to the round of 16.

Shearer believes Rice could solve current issues at right-back, particularly due to injuries affecting Reece James and Jarrell Quansah. His adaptability was evident as he successfully transitioned into defence during the previous game.

Shearer noted, “Putting Rice into right-back position worked as he is the one who got forward and played a part in the goal as well. He (Tuchel) has a decision to make as to whether he thinks about putting Declan Rice into a right-back position. If you’d asked me about that before the game, I’d have been very reluctant to have done that, but he adds quality in that position, and we’ve lacked that with the players he has picked up to now.”

Conversely, former Manchester City right-back Micah Richards cautioned against shifting Rice from midfield, asserting that it would diminish his contributions. He explained, “If you want to go with Rice at right-back, you lose his pace and power in midfield… He can give too much in the central midfield area.” He suggested that for the challenging Mexico game, which will occur at altitude, Rice’s energy should be retained in the midfield, proposing Ezri Konsa for the right-back role.

Despite the tactical discussions, Rice himself expressed admiration for his captain following the match, reaffirming the collective team’s morale and focus on the next challenge. England will face Mexico, a team noted for their solid defensive record in the tournament.

Kane emphasized the importance of continuing to find ways to secure victories against tactically difficult opponents, highlighting the importance of enjoying the journey while competing at a high level. “From an attacking point of view, it’s the best performance so far. We are in the part of the tournament where we have to grind wins out,” he stated. This combination of attacking prowess and defensive solidity will be key in their upcoming clash.
