Sean McCann to represent Scotland at Commonwealth Games
Sean McCann, the younger brother of Madeleine McCann, is set to represent Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, marking a significant achievement in his swimming career, reports BritPanorama.
The 21-year-old has secured a place in the national squad for the rescheduled event, where he will compete alongside prominent athletes, including eight-time Olympic medalist Duncan Scott.
McCann emphasized that representing Scotland is the “pinnacle” of his career, particularly in the context of competing on home soil. “I’m very excited; it’s my first senior games, so I’m just looking forward to representing Scotland and doing my absolute best,” he told Loughborough Sport.
He notes the personal significance of the occasion, having watched the Games as a child in 2014. “I’ve got lots of family up in Glasgow, so that makes it even more special,” he added. His participation, he said, feels like a full-circle moment.
As a distance freestyler, McCann is expected to compete in the 400m, 800m, and 1,500m events. His twin sister, Amelie, has also been selected to join him in Scotland’s squad for the Games, which will take place at Glasgow’s Tollcross International Swimming Centre over 11 days.
Sean’s swimming journey began at the age of eight when he joined Charnwood Triathlon Club. He later trained at Loughborough Town Swimming Club to enhance his skills. “I have had to remain extremely dedicated, getting up at 4am multiple mornings each week to train, since the age of 11,” he mentioned.
As he embarks on this pivotal opportunity, the significance of his sister’s disappearance nearly two decades ago continues to linger, having occurred when he was just two years old. The case remains one of the most high-profile missing person investigations globally, drawing continuous public interest.
While it has not been confirmed whether their parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, will attend the event, Sean’s aspirations extend toward future competitions, including the 2026 Commonwealth Games and the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
