Scottish FA withdraws support for Gianni Infantino

The Scottish Football Association (SFA) has pulled its support for Gianni Infantino, dealing the FIFA President another blow, reports BritPanorama.

The SFA confirmed it will not vote for Infantino’s re-election amidst increasing pressure following his failed sell-off plan, which aimed to create the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE). This commercial entity would have managed FIFA’s ticketing and commercial rights, with 21 percent sold to a private investment company.

The proposal was met with significant backlash, as multiple confederations raised concerns regarding its implications. Notably, UEFA and associations from England, Wales, and the Republic of Ireland have also withdrawn their support for Infantino.

SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell stated, “The position of the SFA has been clear since the 55 UEFA associations met. We have aligned ourselves with the UEFA position and 55 nations are stronger than one voice.” He added that the SFA agrees with UEFA’s expressed lack of confidence in the FIFA leadership and confirmed their intent not to support Infantino in the upcoming re-election in early 2027.

Despite the growing challenges, Infantino is poised to stand for a fourth term in March. He has faced criticism not only from UEFA but also from the Asian Football Confederation and CONCACAF, governing football in North America. In contrast, CONMEBOL has stated they will not back a vote against Infantino, while the Confederation of African Football continues to support him.

FIFA has responded firmly to the escalating challenges faced by Infantino. A spokesperson denounced what they described as a “concerted and ongoing effort by some to undermine” him. The governing body has rejected recent allegations as “categorically untrue” and pressed the need for factual reporting amidst a storm of scrutiny.

Infantino has held the FIFA presidency since winning the position in 2016 and has been re-elected in 2019 and 2023. The current situation reveals the complexities of leadership at FIFA, where external pressures and internal conflicts significantly influence governance.

With the clock ticking towards the next election, the SFA’s withdrawal underscores the shifting alliances that could reshape football governance. The approaching election may serve as a litmus test for the confidence football associations place in Infantino’s vision amid mounting controversies.
