Saltburn Cricket Club cancels fixture amid cheating allegations
Saltburn Cricket Club, facing accusations of cheating for allegedly simulating the sound of a bat edge, has cancelled their upcoming fixture against Marton’s second team, reports BritPanorama.
The club cited difficulties in fielding a squad during the holiday season as the reason for forfeiting the match, which was scheduled to take place this morning, according to the BBC.
Saltburn is currently under investigation by the North Yorkshire and South Durham Cricket League after footage of the incident went viral, being viewed millions of times. The inquiry focuses on claims that an attempt was made to deceive the umpire into ruling a batsman out.
During a match against Norton, video evidence purportedly shows a Saltburn fielder clicking his fingers just as the ball passed batsman Noman Shabir’s bat, followed by wicketkeeper Josh Bowes completing what appeared to be a catch. The umpire subsequently upheld the appeal, declaring Shabir out.
The suggestion is that the clicking noise was made deliberately to convince the official that the ball had taken an edge. A statement from the league noted: “The league have received a formal complaint regarding alleged incidents in a Division Two game on Saturday. A full investigation has been initiated, and until such time as the formal processes are complete, no further comment will be made.”
Bowes himself has drawn scrutiny, sitting atop the league’s catching charts with 31 dismissals, a tally that is notably higher than the next closest competitor. In Saltburn’s previous match, Bowes had an extraordinary eight catches in a single innings, surpassing the men’s Test record for a wicketkeeper.
Concerns regarding Saltburn’s conduct extend beyond this recent incident. Rory Cotterill, captain of Middlesbrough’s second XI, has publicly alleged that Saltburn engaged in two additional instances of cheating during their match last month, raising further questions about the integrity of the club.
