Ronnie O'Sullivan clarifies reasons for relocating abroad, cites personal happiness over tax issues

Ronnie O’Sullivan rebuffs tax motivation claims for Dubai move

Ronnie O’Sullivan has firmly rejected suggestions that his relocation to Dubai was motivated by tax considerations, reports BritPanorama.

The seven-time world champion, currently ranked 12th, asserts that his decision was purely driven by personal happiness.

“I’ve not moved away for any other reason than I’m happy where I’m living,” O’Sullivan stated. “I love being in Dubai and I love being in Ireland. I’ve not moved away for any reason. I just choose to come when I want to come.”

The 50-year-old divides his time between properties in the UAE and Dublin, describing both as his homes. He also spends considerable time in China and Hong Kong. O’Sullivan departed the UK for the Middle East last summer alongside his wife, Laila Rouass, whom he wed in June. His appearances on British soil have been notably sparse since.

Prior to the current World Championship at the Crucible, O’Sullivan had participated in only a single tournament in the UK. He also did not attend the pre-tournament Champions’ Dinner or Media Day.

Yet, the Chigwell-born player exhibited no signs of rust as he launched his campaign for an unprecedented eighth world title, defeating He Guoqiang with commanding ease, securing a 10-2 victory in his opening match.

O’Sullivan confirmed he would remain in Sheffield throughout the competition rather than travelling abroad. His pursuit of excellence throughout a career spanning more than three decades has exacted a psychological toll over the years. As the sport’s most recognisable figure, he carries significant expectations.

The snooker icon admitted he sometimes envies athletes in team sports who can share the pressure with teammates, explaining, “Snooker, you just have to do it all by yourself.” He expressed a desire for the flexibility afforded to team athletes, mentioning team sports like football where players can opt for breaks away from the game.

O’Sullivan has previously withdrawn from events due to stage fright and acknowledged the demanding nature of his career, likening it to boxing. Reflecting on the rigorous challenges he has faced, he remarked, “You’ve got to be here this time, play that person. And I’ve had to play all the best players of different generations.” As he prepares to face long-time rival John Higgins in the last 16, it highlights how even in individual pursuits, the weight of history and rivalry becomes palpably heavy.
