Robert Huth doubts Chelsea can win Premier League title despite strong start
Robert Huth believes winning the Premier League title may be beyond Chelsea this season despite their impressive start under Xabi Alonso, reports BritPanorama.
The Blues have secured four victories in their first five matches since Alonso’s appointment, defeating Fulham and Brighton in the league and overcoming Luton and Leeds in the Carabao Cup. Their only loss thus far was against Arsenal, leaving Chelsea currently positioned fourth in the league table behind Arsenal, Manchester City, and newly-promoted Hull City.
Huth, a former Chelsea defender, has acknowledged the team’s early performance but cautions that the significant turnover of players at Stamford Bridge means Alonso will need time to implement his strategies effectively.
“Yes, two wins to start the season and plenty of goals scored,” he stated. “They are rebuilding right now with plenty of players in and out, so it will take time to gel,” he added.
He further expressed optimism, suggesting that this season could be one of improvement for the club: “I think to win the title may well be a bit much, but you have to admire the club for recruiting such a top coach as Alonso.” Huth noted that while Chelsea has experienced a positive start, finishing in a top-three or top-four position should be their focus.
Alonso faced challenges during the transfer window, notably the departure of Enzo Fernandez, who left Chelsea for £125 million. Despite acknowledging the midfielder’s talent, Huth supported the decision to sell a player unwilling to stay, saying, “If a player doesn’t want to be at the club, then it’s good to move on with the highest fee possible.” However, he recognized the gap left in midfield by Fernandez’s absence.
“Chelsea offensively have looked impressive for sure,” Huth said, praising the club’s goal-scoring ability and the recent addition of Emiliano Martinez as a strong move for defensive improvement. However, he highlighted concerns about the midfield’s depth, particularly given injuries and Fernandez’s departure. “Once the players are back, it will be better,” he commented.
Despite facing criticism from supporters regarding their ownership, Huth pointed to the club’s recent recruitment efforts as evidence of a clearer strategy going forward. “In terms of recruitment, there are really attractive incomings with a clear plan, so it does look to be a good window indeed from Chelsea to get players who will improve the squad,” he concluded.
