Green leader Zack Polanski to contest former seat of Keir Starmer
GREEN leader Zack Polanski will fight Labour to become the next MP for Sir Keir Starmer’s old seat, reports BritPanorama.
Mr Polanski was unveiled as his party’s candidate for the Holborn and St Pancras by-election scheduled for October 8. He successfully overcame a challenge from local Green councillor Hamza Chowdhury, with party members overwhelmingly supporting Mr Polanski’s candidacy.
The London Assembly member will now face Labour candidate Sagal Abdi-Wali, who currently serves as the leader of Camden Council. Ms Abdi-Wali has been in her leadership role since May and has represented Camden Square as a councillor since 2022.
The by-election was triggered after Sir Keir Starmer announced his resignation as an MP last week, creating a vacancy that has prompted an immediate electoral contest in London. This race is poised to be competitive, particularly as the Green Party aims to make significant inroads into Labour’s traditional support in the capital.
Labour has continuously held Holborn and St Pancras since the constituency was created in 1983, seeing only two MPs, Frank Dobson and Sir Keir Starmer, represent the area. In the 2024 general election, Sir Keir secured 48.9 percent of the vote, while pro-Gaza independent Andrew Feinstein came in second with 18.9 percent. The Greens captured 10.4 percent, followed by the Conservatives at 7.2 percent, Reform at 6.1 percent, and the Liberal Democrats at 5.8 percent.

Mr Burnham’s visit to the constituency on Thursday emphasizes Labour’s determination to support Ms Abdi-Wali as she begins her campaign. Sir Keir Starmer, who left Parliament after 11 years representing the constituency, stated it was “the right time” to resign and indicated his intentions to focus on roles in defence, security, trade, and technology, while advocating against violence towards women and girls.
