Todd Boehly nears exit from Chelsea FC

Todd Boehly is reportedly closing in on a dramatic Chelsea exit after agreeing to sell his stake in the Premier League club to Clearlake Capital, reports BritPanorama.

The American businessman and his fellow investors Mark Walter and Hansjorg Wyss collectively own 38.5 per cent of Chelsea but are now set to cash in their shares for a modest profit. According to The Telegraph, negotiations are at an advanced stage and an agreement between the parties is close to being finalised.

The proposed transaction would increase Clearlake’s holding from 61.5 per cent to 99.9 per cent, effectively handing complete control of Chelsea to co-founders Behdad Eghbali and Jose E Feliciano. Boehly became the public face of the consortium which completed its £2.5 billion takeover of the Blues in 2022 following the end of Roman Abramovich’s ownership, committing to investing another £1.75 billion into the club as part of the deal.

Boehly initially positioned himself as interim sporting director during a challenging phase marked by significant spending and frequent managerial changes at Stamford Bridge. However, he has since stepped back from the club’s daily operations, with Eghbali assuming a more prominent role behind the scenes. Reports of tension between the two men first emerged in 2024, coinciding with discussions about a potential buyout.

While the original sale agreement restricted members of the ownership group from selling their shares to outside investors during their first 10 years in control, it appears Walter’s desire to exit has paved the way for Boehly and Wyss to follow suit. Each member of the trio holds an individual stake of approximately 12.83 per cent, though the specifics of their financial returns from Clearlake remain undisclosed.

A spokesperson for Walter mentioned that this transaction values his stake in Chelsea at a premium to his initial investment, describing it as another successful venture in sports investment. Boehly has continued to attend Chelsea fixtures, including a recent match where the Blues suffered a 2-1 defeat against Arsenal.

In the broader landscape of football, this potential shift in ownership raises questions about the future direction of Chelsea FC and the implications for the club’s strategy moving forward. As the dust settles, the fate of Chelsea will likely reflect the complexities of ownership and management in the modern game.
