Every Premier League fixture is initially scheduled for 3pm on a Saturday before broadcasters select which matches they want to show live. Those choices can result in games being moved across the weekend, sometimes leaving travelling supporters facing considerable disruption and increased transport costs.
The Christmas programme is particularly difficult due to reduced public transport services, limited hotel availability, and high demand for tickets during one of the busiest periods of the football calendar. United officials held discussions with senior representatives from both the Premier League and its television partners, arguing that match-going fans needed greater consideration.
Providing several months’ notice would allow supporters to organise trains, accommodation, and other travel arrangements before prices rise or services become fully booked.
