Rafael van der Vaart apologises for controversial comment during match
Former Tottenham midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has apologised after stating that Japan’s players “all look alike” during the Netherlands’ recent contest against Japan, which ended 2-2, reports BritPanorama.
Van der Vaart made the comments while serving as a pundit for the Dutch broadcaster NOS TV, specifically regarding Micky van de Ven failing to track Koki Ogawa’s run. Following backlash, he stated, “They all look alike, of course, maybe he thought that.”
In a subsequent statement, Van der Vaart expressed regret for his remarks, clarifying that it was never his intention to offend anyone. “I oppose racism in all its forms and have respect for people of every background, ethnicity, and culture,” he added, acknowledging that his words may have caused distress.
The anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out and the Frank Soo Foundation condemned his remarks, calling them “hugely disappointing.” They emphasised the importance of responsible language from high-profile figures, especially in contexts that attract large global audiences, such as the World Cup.
During the match, Japan secured a draw with a late equaliser following goals from Virgil van Dijk and Crysencio Summerville for the Dutch side. Despite being heavy favourites, the Netherlands struggled defensively, prompting their head coach Ronald Koeman to defend his tactics post-match. He remarked, “There was also a problem with pressure on the flanks,” acknowledging the need for improvement as the tournament progresses.
In an uncharacteristic start, the Dutch team was unable to secure a win, reminding fans of football’s unpredictable nature, where expectations can quickly shift with the actions on the pitch.
