Gary Lineker praises Harry Kane as England's greatest striker after World Cup victory over Croatia

Harry Kane equals World Cup goal record in England’s opening victory

Harry Kane scored twice as England secured a 4-2 victory over Croatia in their World Cup opener, equalling Gary Lineker’s record of 10 goals at World Cups, reports BritPanorama.

Lineker, who achieved 10 goals during the 1986 and 1990 World Cups, praised Kane, stating he believes the current England captain is “the greatest English striker we’ve ever had.” Kane’s goals during the match showcased his scoring prowess, bringing his overall tally to 81 goals in 115 appearances for the national team, establishing him as the all-time leading goalscorer for the Three Lions.

Kane netted his first goal from the penalty spot after a foul in the box, successfully retaking the kick due to encroachment by Croatia’s Josko Gvardiol and goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic stepping off the line. The match demonstrated England’s resilience, bouncing back after conceding an equaliser just before halftime.

Lineker, speaking on “The Rest is Football” podcast, acknowledged his delight in Kane matching his World Cup record, while reaffirming Kane’s exceptional abilities: “His all-round game is, for me, what separates him from all the others.” Former England captain Alan Shearer expressed confidence that Kane will soon surpass Lineker’s record, underscoring the current striker’s trajectory.

Kane’s performance was further buoyed by the motivational role of manager Thomas Tuchel, who inspired the players to approach the second half without fear after a challenging start. Kane reflected on Tuchel’s influence, stating, “He told us to let the shackles off… let’s just go and show the world who we can be.”

With this victory, England’s World Cup campaign has begun positively, promising exciting developments as they progress through the tournament. As Kane continues to write his legacy, the win sets a formidable tone for a team eager to assert their dominance on the world stage.
