Nottingham Forest defeat Chelsea in significant victory
Nottingham Forest secured a vital 3-1 triumph at Stamford Bridge on Monday, dealing Chelsea their sixth successive Premier League loss despite fielding a heavily rotated squad, reports BritPanorama.
Forest manager Vitor Pereira opted to rest eight players ahead of Thursday’s Europa League semi-final second leg against Aston Villa; however, his reserves proved more than capable of claiming three points.
Taiwo Awoniyi netted twice, while Igor Jesus also found the target, as the visitors moved six points clear of the relegation zone. The defeat marked interim boss Calum McFarlane’s first home fixture since replacing the sacked Liam Rosenior, following his FA Cup semi-final victory over Leeds United.
The visitors quickly established their dominance, with Awoniyi left unmarked to head in Dilane Bakwa’s floated delivery after just two minutes. Bakwa and Awoniyi combined again in the 15th minute when Malo Gusto fouled the Nigerian striker, earning Forest a penalty.
Following a VAR review, Jesus stepped up and converted the penalty straight down the middle, with Gusto fortunate to escape a red card for his challenge. The match was later marred by a concerning head injury to 18-year-old academy winger Jesse Derry, who suffered a collision with Zach Abbott shortly after his maiden senior start, halting play for six minutes while both players were withdrawn.
Chelsea were awarded a penalty due to the incident, but Cole Palmer’s effort was saved by Matz Sels, who dived at full stretch to deny the England international. Awoniyi extended Forest’s advantage seven minutes after the restart, converting Morgan Gibbs-White’s low delivery from close range.
Gibbs-White was involved in another collision, this time with Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, leading to both players requiring treatment for head wounds before being replaced. Joao Pedro had a late strike ruled out for offside but made amends with a stunning bicycle kick in added time, finally ending Chelsea’s league goal drought that had reached over 550 minutes since early March.
The result leaves Nottingham Forest in 16th position, with their top-flight status looking increasingly secure, while Chelsea remains ninth, sitting 10 points adrift of the Champions League qualification places they had targeted at the beginning of the season.
The aftermath of Monday’s match serves as a poignant reminder of how fortunes can shift so rapidly in football, and the pressure mounts on both teams as they navigate the final stages of the season.
