Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk receives four-year suspension
Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk has been handed the maximum four-year suspension by the Football Association following a positive test for the prohibited substance meldonium, reports BritPanorama.
The 25-year-old Ukrainian international is now challenging the sanction at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), having submitted his appeal documentation on 25 February this year. CAS has acknowledged receipt of the filing, confirming that Mudryk is contesting the “imposed period of ineligibility of four years.”
The arbitration body stated that both parties are presently exchanging written submissions, though no hearing date has yet been set. The FA provisionally suspended Mudryk in December 2024 after the sample returned an adverse finding during a routine urine test while he was on international duty.
Formal charges were subsequently brought against the winger in June 2025 after a detailed analysis of the specimen. Meldonium, the substance detected, is known to enhance stamina and aid recovery. The medication was administered abroad during a period when Mudryk was not fulfilling club obligations with Chelsea.
Neither the FA, Chelsea, nor Mudryk’s legal representatives have commented publicly on the matter. The positive test stemmed from samples collected while Mudryk played for Ukraine in matches against Albania and Georgia in November 2024. His final appearance for Chelsea occurred during a 2-0 Conference League victory against Heidenheim on 28 November 2024, before he was suspended.
In light of the findings, Mudryk expressed disbelief at the situation, stating, “This has come as a complete shock as I have never knowingly used any banned substances or broken any rules.” He has continued to maintain his innocence, asserting that he has not done anything wrong and remains hopeful of returning to the pitch soon.
Chelsea has conducted its own internal inquiry following the FA’s investigation, with the club noting Mudryk’s insistence on his lack of knowledge regarding any prohibited substances. He has been barred from training at the club’s Cobham facilities since his suspension, instead maintaining his fitness with personal trainers at alternative locations.
The outcome of Mudryk’s appeal could have significant implications on his career. If the original sanction is upheld, the suspension would likely be backdated to December 2024, potentially keeping him sidelined until late 2028. Those close to him reportedly remain optimistic that the appeal might substantially reduce the punishment, drawing parallels to Paul Pogba’s successful reduction from four years to eighteen months.
