LIV golfers considering DP World Tour after event postponement

LIV golfers are reportedly considering participation in the DP World Tour following the postponement of LIV’s New Orleans event. The tournament, valued at £22 million, was originally slated for June, but organisers cited summer heat as the reason for the delay, reports BritPanorama.

The Saudi-backed league aims to find an alternative autumn date for the New Orleans event to avoid “the peak summer heat and the crowded global sports calendar.” Critics, however, have noted that both factors should have been anticipated during the scheduling process.

The cancellation means no LIV Golf events will take place in the United States from May 10 to August 6, missing crucial months of competitive play. Only three tournaments are scheduled for LIV players during this period, located in South Korea, Spain, and Britain, which may lead to dissatisfaction among those hoping for warm-up events prior to prominent tournaments like the US Open and the Open Championship.

Amid the uncertainty, LIV members who had existing agreements with the DP World Tour will still have access to the Italian Open, BMW International in Germany, and the Scottish Open ahead of the Royal Birkdale. Reports have emerged that several LIV players have expressed interest in returning to the DP World Tour next season.

The postponement has intensified speculation about the financial stability of the LIV circuit, which is perceived to be under pressure following substantial expenditures exceeding £3.7 billion since its inception in 2022. This recent announcement only contributes to apprehensions regarding the league’s future viability.

Despite the challenges, LIV has yet to commit to a rescheduled event, with indications that the proposed autumn alternative may merely function as an exhibition. This growing uncertainty comes just ahead of next week’s tournament at Trump National.

Louisiana officials previously revealed their commitment of £3.7 million to LIV Golf, including £1.63 million designated for course upgrades at Bayou Oaks. Governor Jeff Landry has since called for the return of the £740,000 already disbursed.

Landry stated, “LIV is expected to return all state incentive funds, with the exception of the $2 million already invested in upgrades, ensuring those improvements remain in place for the community.” In a memo to staff, LIV’s chief executive Scott O’Neil attempted to reassure employees about the league’s future, asserting that the 2026 season would proceed “uninterrupted and at full throttle,” even as he left unanswered questions regarding financial support moving forward.

As the competitive landscape shifts, the interactions between established tours and emerging leagues underscore the complexities of professional golf, reminding observers how financial imperatives and sporting ambitions can intersect, often in unpredictable ways.
