Kimi Antonelli secures pole position for Belgian Grand Prix

Kimi Antonelli clinched pole position for the Belgian Grand Prix, completing a lap in 1:44.361, which places him ahead of Max Verstappen, who qualified second. The young Italian’s performance further solidifies his lead in the Driver’s Championship, reports BritPanorama.

Despite not registering a purple sector during his qualifying run, the 18-year-old delivered an impressive lap time, beating Verstappen by three-tenths of a second. Antonelli’s teammate, George Russell, qualified fourth but will start third due to Lando Norris’ 10-place grid penalty, while the reigning champion Verstappen will move from third on the grid to P13.

Charles Leclerc finished qualifying in fifth but will be elevated to fourth, while Lewis Hamilton will start sixth. The remaining top ten includes Oscar Piastri, Arvid Lindblad, Gabriel Bortoleto, who excelled in reaching Q3, and Isack Hadjar. Antonelli dedicated his pole position to his father, who celebrates his 61st birthday today.

Reacting to his performance, Antonelli remarked, “It’s great to be on pole. It was not a very straightforward session; the track changed a lot. But we were able to improve lap by lap and to bring home pole, which was nice. But tomorrow is another day, and obviously I have Max starting next to me, so it’s going to be important to get a good start and then be ahead into turn five.”

Reflecting on his own run, Verstappen attributed part of his performance to his teammate Hadjar, who provided a tow during his lap. “It was definitely helping me, otherwise I would not be standing here. Otherwise I think I would be like P6, or something,” Verstappen stated. He acknowledged that while the results were promising, he would need to keep an eye on competitors during the race.

As the weekend draws near, Norris expressed both excitement and disappointment regarding his grid position, noting the missed opportunity for a stronger showing. “It’s a little bit of a home race for me, so always a bit of a boost, and I’ve performed well all weekend so far,” he said, looking ahead to the race.

This Grand Prix weekend is shaping up to be competitive, with both young talents and seasoned drivers vying for supremacy. How strategies unfold as the race approaches could provide fascinating insights into both driving skill and racing tactics in what promises to be an engaging British motorsport narrative.
