Jürgen Klopp in talks to succeed Julian Nagelsmann as Germany's national team manager

Julian Nagelsmann departs as Germany’s national team manager

Julian Nagelsmann has departed as Germany’s national team manager following their stunning World Cup elimination at the hands of Paraguay in the last 32. The German Football Association confirmed on Thursday that the 38-year-old’s contract, originally set to run until Euro 2028, has been terminated with immediate effect, reports BritPanorama.

The DFB announced that former Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp “has already indicated his fundamental readiness to take over the position.” The 59-year-old has been providing punditry for German television throughout the tournament.

Nagelsmann’s exit follows crisis talks with federation officials at their Frankfurt headquarters after Monday’s penalty shootout defeat in Boston. Reports indicate he was encouraged to resign voluntarily after explaining the Paraguay defeat to DFB officials.

According to Bild, Nagelsmann was offered a €7m severance package to end his contract early, representing approximately one year’s salary. “The decision was anything but easy for me,” Nagelsmann stated. “My top priority has always been the success of the team. After such a bitter disappointment, it deserves the chance of a new beginning.”

DFB president Bernd Neuendorf praised the departing coach’s “high level of commitment and extraordinary ambition,” describing him as “an extremely responsible and sincere person.” Sporting director Rudi Völler expressed confidence that Nagelsmann would “continue to follow his path successfully.”

The Paraguay result marks Germany’s third consecutive World Cup disappointment since their triumphant 2014 campaign in Brazil, and it was the first occasion the Mannschaft had suffered a penalty shootout defeat at a World Cup finals.

Under Nagelsmann’s stewardship, Germany navigated Group E successfully, demolishing debutants Curaçao 7-1 before edging past Ivory Coast 2-1, though they fell 2-1 to Ecuador. They finished above Ivory Coast on goal difference to claim top spot. This latest defeat follows another painful tournament exit at Euro 2024, where eventual champions Spain eliminated Germany in the quarter-finals.

Klopp left Anfield at the conclusion of the 2023-24 season, having delivered both Premier League and Champions League titles during his tenure. He subsequently assumed the role of head of global soccer at Red Bull. Sky Germany reports that the former Mainz and Borussia Dortmund manager holds a verbal agreement permitting him to leave his current position for the national team role.

Nagelsmann’s departure has prompted a response from the highest levels of German politics. Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s spokesperson, Stefan Kornelius, told reporters at a government press conference on Friday that the chancellor expressed gratitude for Nagelsmann’s “commitment and service in recent years.”

As changes loom on the horizon for German football, the question remains whether a new leader can restore the nation’s once-unassailable standing in world football. Rarely is the gap between expectation and reality so stark, underscoring how quickly fortunes can shift in this unpredictable game.
