John McEnroe expresses support for injured Emma Raducanu ahead of Wimbledon withdrawal

Emma Raducanu withdraws from Wimbledon due to injury

Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from Wimbledon after sustaining a stress fracture in her lower right leg, prompting well-wishes from tennis legend John McEnroe, reports BritPanorama.

The world No. 33’s withdrawal was announced on the Sunday before the tournament commenced, disappointing many fans who had hoped to see the British No. 1 compete. Raducanu, who was seeded 30th, was set to face Croatia’s Antonia Ruzic in her opening match on Monday.

Speaking on his BBC Radio 5 Live show, McEnroe expressed sympathy for Raducanu, highlighting her ongoing struggle with injuries: “Emma’s continuing to have these problems and can’t stay healthy. We hope she gets healthy soon.”

Concerns over Raducanu’s fitness grew when she was seen with strapping on her leg during practice sessions at SW19, and she curtailed one practice session early. Despite raising hopes with statements at her pre-match press conference about her intention to play, news of her withdrawal confirmed the end of her ambitions at her home Grand Slam.

The injury came shortly after Raducanu’s promising run to the final at Queens, where she was defeated by Croatia’s Donna Vekic in three sets. Following that event, she also pulled out of the WTA 250 tournament in Nottingham due to the same leg issue.

McEnroe also praised Arthur Fery’s remarkable journey to the Wimbledon semi-finals as a qualifier, shifting focus slightly away from the disappointment regarding Raducanu. “Thank god for Arthur Fery in a way!” he said during the show, recognising the varying trajectories faced by emerging British tennis players.

Reflecting on the challenges within British tennis, McEnroe remarked on Jack Draper’s struggles since his promising performance as a fourth seed last year: “I thought last year was the first year he could win a major. Been a total nightmare since.”

As tennis fans grapple with the absence of Raducanu, her withdrawal underscores the unpredictable nature of sport, marked by both soaring highs and challenging lows. It’s a stark reminder of how quickly enthusiasm can turn into disappointment in the world of elite competition.
