Jannik Sinner’s parents decline Royal Box invitation at Wimbledon

Jannik Sinner has shared that his parents declined the opportunity to watch him from Wimbledon’s prestigious Royal Box, preferring to remain away from the public eye, reports BritPanorama.

The world No 1 anticipated their response when the invitation was offered ahead of his opening match at the All England Club, noting that neither of his parents feels comfortable in front of television cameras.

Instead of accepting one of tennis’s most exclusive invitations as the defending champion embarked on his latest Wimbledon campaign, Sinner stated it was unlikely they would reconsider. “I know my parents. I asked them, but it was impossible,” he remarked.

While the conversation was brief, Sinner understood their decision. “Mostly I know my mum and the fact that she doesn’t want to be in front of the cameras at all, same thing for my dad. I expected a firm no and it came, so all good,” he added.

Despite their absence from the Royal Box, Sinner’s parents were present at Wimbledon, notably watching him triumph over Carlos Alcaraz last year to claim the title, although the Royal Box was deemed too much. This contrasts with Iga Swiatek’s parents, who accepted a similar invitation and attended her opening match.

Among the well-known faces in the Centre Court crowd was David Beckham, who was seen with his mother as they watched Sinner’s title defence unfold.

Sinner faced a tough challenge in his opening match, rallying from a two-sets-to-one deficit to secure victory over Miomir Kecmanovic in a five-set thriller. Since that match, the 24-year-old has demonstrated impressive form, securing straight-sets victories against Nuno Borges and Jenson Brooksby to reach the last 16 for the fifth consecutive year.

“For sure, very, very happy about the win,” he said following his match against Brooksby. “Trying to improve every day… small step forward today. If I want to go far in this tournament, a couple of things we need to handle better.”

Sinner will face Japan’s Shintaro Mochizuki next, recognizing the potential challenge posed by an opponent who has dropped only one set in the tournament.

The quiet resolve of Sinner’s family underscores a relatable narrative within the sport: the blend of personal choice and professional ambition. As players navigate their paths under public scrutiny, the choices of those closest to them highlight the delicate balance between fame and personal comfort in tennis.
