Tottenham’s disastrous Champions League start against Atletico Madrid
Igor Tudor’s decision to bench Guglielmo Vicario in favour of Antonin Kinsky resulted in immediate repercussions as Tottenham conceded an early goal against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, reports BritPanorama.
Making his European debut for Spurs, Kinsky’s error handed Atletico’s Marcos Llorente the opening goal just six minutes into the match. The interim manager’s gamble quickly drew scrutiny following Tottenham’s lacklustre performance against Crystal Palace in their previous outing.
The situation worsened for Kinsky in the 15th minute when a poorly executed backpass left him exposed. The Czech goalkeeper missed his kick, allowing Julian Alvarez to score into an empty net and leaving Tottenham trailing 3-0 within the first quarter of an hour.
Before Alvarez’s goal, Antoine Griezmann had doubled Atletico’s lead, capitalising on a defensive lapse to put the home side in a commanding position. In a mere 22 minutes, Spurs found themselves 4-0 down after Robin Le Normand netted, needing goal-line technology to confirm his effort following a parry from Vicario.
While Pedro Porro reduced the deficit slightly, the manner of the goals raised significant concerns regarding Tudor’s judgement in selecting such an inexperienced goalkeeper for a pivotal European clash. Before the match, Tudor stated, “I choose today what I think is best for the team in this moment,” acknowledging the tactical risks involved.
This match marked another setback for Tudor, who has yet to secure a victory since taking over following Thomas Frank’s departure last month.
In this chaotic contest, Tottenham’s struggles continue to overshadow their campaign, further complicating their already tenuous position in European football.
