Gary Neville abused in public by fan
Gary Neville, the former Manchester United defender and current Sky Sports pundit, faced verbal abuse while walking in public, with footage of the confrontation subsequently shared on social media platform X, reports BritPanorama.
The incident occurred as the 51-year-old was accompanied by a woman when a man aggressively approached him on the street. The confrontation was captured on camera by the abuser, who hurled insults at the football pundit.
In the video, the man can be heard shouting, “Is that Gary Neville? W***er,” before launching into a tirade of abuse. When Neville asked, “What?”, the aggressor continued his verbal assault, repeatedly calling him a “fing w****r.”
Neville appeared to acknowledge that he was being recorded during the exchange. The abuser concluded his rant by claiming that Neville had no understanding of working-class people, stating, “You’ve got f*** all to know about the working class man you have.”
Tracey Neville, the 49-year-old former England netball international and Gary’s sister, responded directly to a social media post about the incident, writing, “Situations like these are truly scary and I can assure you they are not delightful.” Her message was accompanied by crying and heartbroken emojis, reflecting concern for her brother’s experience.
Former Arsenal and Celtic striker John Hartson also voiced his support for Neville on social media, condemning the abuser and stating, “What does this Moron think he is achieving?” Hartson criticized the act of public abuse, arguing that if someone feels inclined to abuse others, it should be done from the comfort of their own home, not in public.
Although Neville was working at the Etihad covering Manchester City’s 2-1 victory over Arsenal for Sky Sports at the time, he has not publicly addressed the incident. Since retiring from professional football in January 2011, Neville has established himself as a prominent pundit. A decorated player, he won eight Premier League titles with Manchester United and made 85 appearances for England.
This incident highlights the often intense scrutiny that public figures face, particularly in the realm of sports. It serves as a reminder of the thin line between passionate football culture and unacceptable behaviour in public spaces.
