Controversy leads to removal of France Pierron from L’Equipe program
French television presenter France Pierron has reportedly been removed from her presenting duties on L’Equipe’s Monday programme following a fierce backlash over her criticism of Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku, reports BritPanorama.
Pierron, during Friday’s edition of L’Equipe de Choc, sparked outrage when she labelled Doku’s decision to leave Belgium’s training camp for the birth of his first child as “disgusting,” stating that fathers are “useless” during childbirth. Her remarks quickly led to widespread condemnation across social media platforms.
According to French journalist Clement Garin, L’Equipe has officially distanced itself from Pierron, announcing her suspension from future broadcasts. An official statement from the broadcaster highlighted that her comments did not align with the values of the network and apologised to Doku and its viewers.
Pierron further escalated the situation by arguing that attending a World Cup represents a unique opportunity that should take precedence over family matters. “The World Cup is an incredible joy,” she stated. “There are hundreds of footballers who would kill to be in your shoes. It might never happen again in your life.”
During the broadcast, she continued to defend her position, asserting that Doku’s choice to attend the birth would result in exhaustion and emotional distress. Fellow panellists challenged her comments, yet she remained steadfast in her views.
Following the backlash, Pierron issued an apology via social media, clarifying that her comments reflected her personal perspective and were not meant to undermine the fatherly role. Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins publicly supported Doku when asked about the situation at a recent England press conference, stating that a birth is a once-in-a-lifetime event that should be cherished.
