FIFA to discuss potential delay of England versus Mexico World Cup match due to thunderstorms

England and Mexico face World Cup match uncertainty

England and Mexico’s World Cup showdown is still facing the threat of delay, despite the match currently being confirmed to take place at 1am on Monday morning, reports BritPanorama.

Yesterday, chaos ensued when reports suggested that the fixture would be brought forward by six hours due to the threat of severe weather. However, FIFA later confirmed that the game would proceed as scheduled, despite a 90 per cent chance of thunderstorms in the area.

The governing body’s rules stipulate that any lightning within a six-mile radius of the ground will lead to postponement to protect fans and players. As a precaution, Sky Sports’ Rob Dorsett has confirmed that FIFA is set to meet with local organisers in Mexico City later today to further discuss the situation.

While FIFA has ruled out an earlier kick-off, concerns remain. “Kick-off won’t come forward 6hrs, but it may be affected,” Dorsett noted. Thunderstorms threaten to disrupt England’s preparations for what is one of their most significant matches in the tournament.

Mexico has previously experienced weather-related disruptions during this World Cup, with their last-32 tie against Ecuador delayed by an hour due to thunder and lightning in Mexico City. This precedent raises additional apprehension ahead of the match against England, particularly as supporters are already making their way to the Estadio Azteca.

An earlier kick-off would have created serious logistical issues for fans travelling to the stadium, many of whom could have missed the start of the match. While the potential for a delay lingers, organisational challenges persist.

For Thomas Tuchel and his squad, the match’s uncertainty adds to the overall tension. Security has been enhanced around the England team hotel after it was leaked before their arrival, leading to a hostile reception for players, including captain Harry Kane.

Tuchel is also wary that fans might attempt to disrupt the team’s sleep prior to the match, using tactics that were reportedly employed against Ecuador. England delayed their journey to Mexico City to address concerns over security and spying, opting to return to their base in Kansas City after beating DR Congo.

Tuchel has acknowledged the difficulties posed by the match’s unique conditions, with the Azteca Stadium situated over 7,000 feet above sea level. “We will expect that,” he said when discussing potential disturbances, highlighting the need for the squad to adapt under challenging circumstances.

Ultimately, as England prepares for a grueling encounter, the unpredictable elements of both weather and local tension serve as a reminder of the hurdles elite teams must navigate in pursuit of World Cup glory.
