Emma Raducanu experiments with new racket ahead of tennis season
Emma Raducanu trialled a Yonex racket during her preparation in Australia ahead of the new tennis season, sparking speculation about a potential equipment switch from her long-time supplier Wilson, reports BritPanorama.
The British No 1 spent approximately two weeks practising with the Japanese manufacturer’s equipment before the United Cup commenced. However, when Raducanu faced Greece’s Maria Sakkari in her opening match of the campaign, she opted for her familiar Wilson racket instead.
The 22-year-old ultimately lost to the Greek player in a three-set encounter, and she later addressed inquiries regarding her racket experimentation during the post-match press conference. Raducanu has been associated with Wilson since her junior days, with the American brand’s logo prominently displayed during her remarkable US Open triumph in 2021.
The sight of Raducanu wielding a Yonex racket in practice prompted conjecture about her potential departure from Wilson. This public trial suggests she may no longer be bound by contractual obligations since such experimentation is typically restricted under an active sponsorship agreement.
Raducanu explained her choice to return to Wilson for the match, citing a lack of time to develop trust in the new equipment. “I didn’t have much time to test because I wasn’t playing for too long,” she noted. She acknowledged that while the Yonex performed well, the leap to rely on it during competitive play came too quickly.
Curious about the benefits of the alternative equipment, she expressed, “I was just looking to see if there was anything I can gain or add and hoped that I could have that time to do it.” Despite the Yonex E-Zone’s reputation for delivering extra power, Raducanu revealed she was seeking greater pace, especially as conditions can change throughout the match.
“In a racket, I probably was looking for a bit more power, a bit more help and miles per hour on the ball, especially when it gets so heavy like it can in the evenings and with the balls,” she explained. However, it seems for now, she will stick with her Wilson setup until another opportunity arises in her schedule.
In the delicate dance between equipment and performance, Raducanu’s quest for an edge highlights the constant evolution of professional tennis—where every detail can sway the outcome, and trust in one’s tools is paramount.
