Elliot Anderson becomes most expensive British player as Manchester City signs him for £116 million
Elliot Anderson has set a new record as the most expensive British player ever, with Manchester City completing a remarkable £116 million transfer from Nottingham Forest, reports BritPanorama.
This recent deal overtakes the previous record of £115 million paid by Real Madrid for Jude Bellingham in the summer of 2023. In addition, only two other signings from last summer surpass Anderson in value: Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, costing £125 million and £116.5 million respectively.
The transfer was confirmed after Anderson received clearance from the England squad to undergo a medical examination while competing at the FIFA World Cup. Manchester City issued a statement announcing: “Manchester City and Nottingham Forest have reached an agreement for the transfer of Elliot Anderson. Anderson, 23, is currently competing at the FIFA World Cup with England and has completed a medical in Kansas. The formalities of the move will be finalised upon his return to England.”
In a show of goodwill, City expressed their support for Anderson’s World Cup journey: “In the meantime, everyone at Manchester City wishes Elliot and the England squad the very best of luck in their World Cup campaign, and we look forward to welcoming him to Manchester in due course.” Last season, Anderson made a remarkable 37 starts out of 38 appearances for Nottingham Forest, contributing four goals and four assists.
This signing marks the first major transfer under new City manager Enzo Maresca, who recently took over from Pep Guardiola. Maresca acknowledges his move from Chelsea, stating on social media: “The decision was only mine. I recognise that my departure from Chelsea in the middle of the season caused disruption for the club and I apologise for that. It was neither my intention nor my wish.”
Manchester City also paid Chelsea £17 million in compensation for Maresca’s contract. The acquisition of Anderson is indicative of a wider trend in high-value transfers this window, with notable deals including Sandro Tonali moving from Newcastle United to Tottenham for £100 million and Matheus Fernandes joining Spurs from West Ham for £85 million.
As the football transfer landscape shifts dramatically, it’s clear that records are being rewritten, and the stakes continue to rise in the pursuit of top talent. Anderson’s move not only cements his status but also highlights the intense financial dynamics of the current market, where even the brightest prospects are seen as invaluable assets to clubs aiming for supremacy.
