Dustin Johnson faces tough round at the US Open
Former Masters champion Dustin Johnson endured a challenging second round at the US Open, recording a quadruple bogey after taking three shots to escape a bunker on hole 15 at Shinnecock Hills, reports BritPanorama.
Johnson had a promising start, ending the first round just one shot off the lead, but his performance deteriorated on the back nine. The pivotal moment came at hole 15, which proved costly for the American.
After attempting to take the pin with his first shot from the bunker, Johnson misjudged the sloping green, resulting in his ball rolling back into the bunker. His efforts to recover only exacerbated the situation, and he ultimately took an eight on the par four hole, ending the day with a score of 78, pushing his total to four over par. This score appears sufficient to qualify for the weekend.
Wyndham Clark emerged as the standout competitor, heading into the weekend at seven under par. After his second round of 69, Clark highlighted his focus on maintaining quality shots and managing challenges on the course, stating, “It’s been very kind of boring golf right now, which is really nice and good at a US Open.”
Meanwhile, Matt Fitzpatrick, the 2022 US Open champion, positioned himself well with a score of three under par after the first two rounds. Reflecting on his rounds, he acknowledged the need for consistency, particularly with his putting, emphasizing the importance of remaining patient during the demanding conditions of the tournament.
This year’s US Open has proven to be a testing ground for many players, with the course layout and conditions creating numerous challenges. Johnson’s struggles serve as a stark reminder of the high stakes inherent in major golf tournaments where even the most experienced players can falter under pressure. As the competition continues over the weekend, all eyes will be on Clark and Fitzpatrick as they vie for the championship.
