De Zerbi apologises as Tottenham draw with Brighton
Roberto De Zerbi has apologised after Tottenham failed to beat Brighton on Saturday night, with the north London giants pegged back late, reports BritPanorama.
Spurs appeared to be heading towards a first victory in 15 matches when Xavi Simons struck with 13 minutes remaining. However, Brighton equalised late through Georginio Rutter, leaving their opponents still in the relegation zone.
Tottenham took the lead twice, first through Pedro Porro, but ultimately settled for just a point, leaving them to reconsider their approach in the upcoming fixture.
De Zerbi acknowledged the pressure on his players and expressed regret for not securing the win. “I am sorry for the result and players because they are suffering too much, and we deserved to win the game against a great Brighton – a big congratulations for their style and level of players,” he remarked. He added, “But we could not concede that goal from Rutter at that point of the game.”
Following the match, De Zerbi praised his team’s character despite the disappointing draw, noting, “I am positive, but I am proud of my players because they played a fantastic game full of character, spirit, what I asked of them to play in this stadium, for this club.” He emphasised the need to focus on the next match against Wolverhampton, stating that they could compete if they maintained the same level of performance.
Despite the setback, De Zerbi highlighted areas of promise in his side’s display, contrasting it with a flat performance against Sunderland the previous week. “I know we are fighting to stay in the Premier League. A very difficult moment. But we are lucky, every one of us to work in this club with these fans because it was an incredible atmosphere today,” he explained.
The draw means Tottenham face a tough battle to preserve their status in the top tier as they look to avoid relegation. De Zerbi remains hopeful, stating, “You would think we are fighting for Champions League, not relegation. Until the end, we will fight in every game and give our best. If we are able to give our best, it’s not finished yet.”
With Leeds securing a victory and Nottingham Forest and West Ham also in action on Sunday, Tottenham’s position is precarious, highlighting the challenges ahead for the club in the coming weeks.
The draw serves as a reminder that even within the throes of competition, positivity and resilience will be key if Tottenham are to rise above their current plight. In the world of football, hope is often built one game at a time, and this match will linger in the minds of fans and players alike as they push forward.
