Andy Burnham signals tougher rules for benefits claimants
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has warned benefits claimants that they could face stricter conditions to maintain their support, vowing to address the increasing welfare bill seriously, reports BritPanorama.
In his first major interview since taking office, Mr. Burnham indicated that some claimants may need to pursue work opportunities to continue receiving benefits. He asserted that there are individuals who could return to work “with the right support.”
During an interview with the BBC, Mr. Burnham explained, “It’s about changing the nature of the support and making some of the support conditional upon people taking opportunities that are presented in front of them.” He acknowledged the necessity of increasing the conditions required to receive benefits, emphasizing that support should be tied to active participation in available work opportunities.
Mr. Burnham expressed approval for government guarantees providing opportunities for young people, highlighting mental health support as part of that initiative. He noted, “Let me just say something more though, about you’re driving at, which is the welfare bill. I think we’ve got to get really serious as a country at getting the welfare down.” However, the Labour leader clarified that he does not seek to blame those claiming benefits directly.
He remarked that many young individuals have been “quite seriously let down” due to a lack of necessary support during their formative years. These comments arise amidst ongoing pressure on the government to manage Britain’s rising benefits expenditure more effectively, particularly after a prior backbench rebellion against Labour’s welfare reforms under Sir Keir Starmer.
Additionally, Sir Alan Milburn’s review highlighted that over one million young people are currently not in education, employment, or training. Recommendations from this review are expected this autumn. Simultaneously, a separate evaluation of the disability benefits system is underway.
In related remarks, Mr. Burnham delivered a stark warning regarding the NHS, suggesting that the health service would face severe challenges unless comprehensive reforms to the social care system are implemented. He pledged to invest “whatever political capital I have” in reforming social care but refrained from promising a new system ahead of the next general election, stating, “I can’t put a timeline on it right here, right now.” He cautioned that failure to act could result in the NHS collapsing under the weight of unnecessary patient care.
