Defence Secretary vows to resign over funding for Armed Forces
Defence Secretary Wes Streeting has pledged to resign if Prime Minister Andy Burnham does not allocate the necessary funding to rebuild Britain’s Armed Forces, reports BritPanorama.
Streeting stated that fully funding Labour’s Defence Investment Plan (DIP) is a “matter of principle” and emphasized the need for significant financial support to address military readiness and capabilities.
The government will need to address a £4.7 billion shortfall in the defence plan over the next five years, alongside identifying £10.3 billion in savings from other government departments. Streeting assured that the DIP would receive complete funding, anticipating that Chancellor John Healey would detail the financial plan at future fiscal discussions.
Prime Minister Burnham has not yet committed to raising defence spending to three percent of GDP, stating that his “first challenge” is securing full funding for the DIP ahead of the upcoming budget. He refrained from specifying when exactly Britain might achieve this expenditure target.
The Office for Budget Responsibility has indicated that reaching the three percent benchmark by the end of the decade would necessitate an additional £17.3 billion annually. As part of his commitments, Streeting has expressed support for former President Donald Trump’s assertion that Europe should take on a larger share of its own security, though he clarified that the UK government would not compromise its positions in deference to the US.
