Danny Welbeck in line for England recall ahead of World Cup
Danny Welbeck is reportedly set for a sensational England recall after nearly eight years in the international wilderness as Thomas Tuchel prepares to finalise his provisional World Cup squad, reports BritPanorama.
If selected, it would mark a remarkable turnaround for Welbeck, whose last appearance for the England national football team came in September 2018 during a 1-0 friendly victory over Switzerland at Leicester’s King Power Stadium.
Now 35, Welbeck is enjoying one of the finest seasons of his career. The former Manchester United and Arsenal forward has scored 14 goals in all competitions — the best return of his professional career in a single campaign.
His outstanding form has played a crucial role in Brighton’s push for European qualification under manager Fabian Hürzeler. With two matches remaining, the Seagulls remain firmly in contention for a potential Champions League place.
Welbeck’s impact has been substantial; his goals this season have contributed 13 additional points to Brighton, underscoring his importance to one of the Premier League’s surprise packages. In the top flight, he has struck 13 times, making him one of the highest-scoring English players in the division this term.
That form has thrust him firmly into contention to provide back-up to Harry Kane, who remains England’s undisputed first-choice striker. Tuchel is expected to announce his final squad on May 22, with the identity of Kane’s understudy one of the biggest talking points.
Welbeck was overlooked for Tuchel’s last squad in March, when Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dominic Solanke were both included, along with Ollie Watkins, despite another productive season for Aston Villa.
However, Welbeck’s consistency, experience, and sharp finishing have reportedly persuaded Tuchel to take a fresh look at the veteran frontman. Also expected to feature in the provisional group are Luke Shaw and Jarrad Branthwaite.
Shaw, plagued by injury issues for years, has been a regular member of the Manchester United squad this term under both Ruben Amorim and Michael Carrick. Meanwhile, Branthwaite has flourished for Everton as the Toffees aim for European football next season, although his limited league appearances may count against him.
As preparations for the World Cup intensify, Welbeck’s potential recall serves as a testament to resilience and the unpredictable nature of football. It’s a reminder that while youth is often heralded, there remains a place for experience and contribution from seasoned players at the highest level.
