Coco Gauff exits Roland-Garros in shock defeat
Coco Gauff’s title defence at Roland-Garros came to a stunning end on Saturday as the American fell to 28th seed Anastasia Potapova in the third round, reports BritPanorama.
The Russian-born Austrian claimed victory 4-6 7-6 (7-1) 6-4 in a dramatic encounter on Court Philippe-Chatrier. Gauff, who lifted the trophy twelve months ago, found herself unable to cope with Potapova’s attacking style of play.
Despite securing the opening set, the defending champion watched her opponent mount a remarkable fightback across the final two sets, sealing one of the most significant upsets of the tournament so far.
Potapova’s path to victory was anything but straightforward, with the 28th seed repeatedly letting commanding positions slip away. Having established a 4-2 advantage in the opening set, she held two break points that would have given her a 5-2 cushion, only to surrender four games in succession.
The second set followed a similar pattern as Potapova raced to 5-2 and earned two set points, yet somehow found herself serving to stay in the match. She dominated the subsequent tiebreak 7-1, but the rollercoaster continued when she dropped serve in the third game of the decider before rallying to close out the contest 6-4.
Speaking courtside after her triumph, Potapova was visibly struggling with cramp in her right arm but could not contain her joy. “I’m cramping a little bit but it’s OK, it’s all good. I don’t have any words now, I’m extremely happy,” she said.
The 28th seed paid tribute to her opponent whilst reflecting on her own mental fortitude throughout the gruelling contest. “The fight we could show, both of us – Coco is such a champion and I respect her so much. I’m unbelievably proud of myself that I stayed there, that I was fighting until the last point.” When asked whether this ranked as her greatest career victory, Potapova replied: “It’s up there in the top three for sure.”
Court Philippe-Chatrier has proven a treacherous venue for the tournament’s leading contenders, with Gauff’s departure adding to a growing list of high-profile casualties. The showpiece arena has already witnessed the exits of men’s world number one Jannik Sinner and 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic earlier in the fortnight. Sixth seed Amanda Anisimova also fell victim to the Chatrier curse on Saturday, losing to home favourite Diane Parry.
In contrast, world number one Aryna Sabalenka avoided similar misfortune by competing on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, where she dispatched Daria Kasatkina 6-0 7-5 without incident.
As the dust settles on another unpredictable day at Roland-Garros, the tournament has once again demonstrated that even defending champions are not immune to the shocks of sport — where fortunes can shift with each passing point.
