Casemiro responds to Carragher’s remarks on football retirement
Casemiro has accused Jamie Carragher of being “disrespectful” after the former Liverpool defender suggested during a live television broadcast that the Manchester United midfielder should “leave the football before the football leaves you”, reports BritPanorama.
Carragher’s comments followed United’s 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in May 2024, where he asserted that Casemiro ought to consider ending his career at the top level and potentially moving to leagues such as MLS or Saudi Arabia.
“I think Casemiro should know tonight that he should only have another three games left at the top level,” Carragher stated, urging him to assess his situation realistically before it was too late.
Now, more than two years later, Casemiro has firmly responded to Carragher’s assessment on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel. “It’s your opinion. I respect your opinion,” the 34-year-old said, but added, “I don’t like it because it’s disrespectful. It’s disrespectful to me.”
Casemiro acknowledged that his second season at Manchester United was challenging, hampered by injuries that sidelined him for around three months, and a role shift to centre-back amid the club’s turbulent campaign. He noted the relentless nature of criticism that players face during difficult periods, asserting, “When you’re not playing well, everyone kills you.”
Rather than succumbing to pressure, Casemiro rebounded this season, scoring nine Premier League goals from midfield and playing a pivotal role in United’s Champions League qualification. He pointed to his mental fortitude, remarking, “For me, it’s here,” indicating his resilience.
On his impending departure from Old Trafford, Casemiro suggested it was the right moment to seek new challenges, stating, “I decided to leave because I live in a good moment,” a sentiment echoed by his past experiences at Real Madrid where he was similarly revered.
As he prepares to leave the club with both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup to his name, Casemiro’s success highlights the balance of a storied career nearing its next chapter. The Red Devils’ final two league matches against Nottingham Forest and Brighton will mark the end of his impactful stint in Manchester.
In football, as Casemiro’s journey illustrates, the crossroads between legacy and the next chapter often come sooner than expected. The tension between respect for a player’s past and the harsh realities of decline is a narrative as old as the game itself.
