Mike Dean faces backlash over podcast revelations
Former Premier League official Mike Dean has ignited a firestorm of criticism after confessing to playing secret personal challenges whilst officiating top-flight football matches, reports BritPanorama.
The 61-year-old, who hung up his whistle in 2022 after a 22-year career in the Premier League, made the extraordinary admission on the Jamie Vardy’s Having a Party podcast. Dean described how he and his fellow officials would devise private games during live fixtures purely for their own amusement.
His remarks have provoked widespread fury among supporters, who have condemned the behaviour as “disgusting,” “unprofessional” and “diabolical.” The revelations raise fresh questions about the culture within English football’s officiating ranks, particularly during the pre-VAR era.
Pro Ref, the recently rebranded body responsible for professional match officials, declined to comment when contacted regarding Dean’s claims.
Dean revealed one of his favourite diversions involved deliberately avoiding use of his whistle for as long as possible. “There used to be games that we used to have, as a laugh, we used to say, ‘Right, we’ll kick off now, right? See how long we can go without blowing a whistle,'” he explained in the podcast. He claimed to have managed this feat on multiple occasions prior to the introduction of VAR, going “20–25 minutes without blowing a whistle a few times. Let it go, let it go, let it go,” he added.
The former official also disclosed a second self-imposed challenge. “I used to stand in the centre circle and see how long I could stay in the centre circle before I had to leave,” he said. “Got about 15 minutes once in one game, without leaving the centre circle.”
The backlash on social media was swift and unforgiving. “Why are they laughing at this?” demanded one supporter. “It’s disgusting from a supposed top referee. Messing around while fans pay hundreds of pounds for matches to be officiated professionally.” Another user expressed frustration over Dean’s comments: “What else was going on that he’s not disclosing? And they call themselves professional,” another fumed.
Dean’s career spanned more than two decades, during which he took charge of 553 Premier League fixtures between 2000 and 2022, making him the most recognisable referee in the country. He served as a video assistant referee during the 2022-23 campaign before departing entirely in 2023.
This is far from his first controversial disclosure. Dean previously admitted that he chose not to refer a decision to the pitchside monitor during a fractious Chelsea versus Tottenham draw in August 2022, in order to spare his colleague Anthony Taylor further difficulty. The incident involved Cristian Romero pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair, which warranted a red card.
His relationship with managers was frequently combative. Arsène Wenger branded Dean “not honest” and “a disgrace” following a 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion in 2017, earning the Frenchman a three-match touchline suspension for his outburst.
Pro Ref, the body formerly known as PGMOL, offered no response when journalists sought their reaction to Dean’s claims. The organisation now operates under the leadership of Howard Webb, who assumed the role of Chief Refereeing Officer in August 2022, after the period in which Dean’s self-described antics took place.
Supporters expressed concern that such revelations would only compound the difficulties faced by today’s match officials. “Stories like this only make it worse for refs of today,” one fan remarked. “More scrutiny, more pressure. Astonishing really.” Another simply stated, “Every fan should be refunded for this.”
The admission that fouls were deliberately overlooked to satisfy a private wager between officials will do little to restore public confidence in Premier League refereeing standards, at a time when the profession already finds itself under relentless examination from fans, pundits and players alike.
In a game designed for integrity, Dean’s comments ring alarmingly hollow, a reminder that trust in officiating is as fragile as the tempers it often ignites.
