Barcelona sporting director explains Marcus Rashford’s omission
Barcelona sporting director Deco has clarified the decision not to sign Marcus Rashford permanently following a successful loan stint at the club, reports BritPanorama.
During his loan spell, Rashford scored 14 goals, contributing to Barcelona’s success in securing both the La Liga title and the Copa del Rey. Despite this, the club opted instead to secure a permanent deal for English forward Anthony Gordon, who arrived for a fee of £69.3 million.
Speaking to Catalan radio station RAC1, Deco expressed gratitude for Rashford’s contributions last season but indicated that Gordon’s style complements the team’s tactical framework more effectively. “We are extremely grateful to Rashford. He contributed a lot last season, but our idea of play is much more linked to Anthony’s. His style fits with what the coach is looking for,” Deco stated.
Deco also elaborated on the club’s need for a player who could provide energy in the absence of Raphinha. He highlighted Gordon’s readiness to step into the role as a significant factor in the decision-making process. “In the case of Gordon, we saw that he was one of the figures we needed. When Raphinha wasn’t on the pitch, the team lost energy,” he noted, referencing the player’s ability to exert pressure for a transfer from Newcastle.
Gordon’s integration has already seen him deliver four assists in his first five La Liga matches, with Barcelona winning all of those fixtures. As he remarked upon joining the club, playing alongside talents like Lamine Yamal was a promising prospect for him. Gordon, who signed until 2031 and finished as Newcastle’s top scorer last season, signifies Barcelona’s commitment to adding players suited to their strategic vision.
