Cambridge United signs Jack Walton on emergency loan

Cambridge United has secured the services of goalkeeper Jack Walton on a week-long emergency loan arrangement from Championship outfit Preston North End, reports BritPanorama.

The 27-year-old shot-stopper arrives at Abbey Stadium ahead of a pivotal League Two encounter at promotion rivals Bromley on Thursday evening. This move comes as Cambridge, currently third in the table, aims to close the gap on league leaders Bromley to just three points with a victory.

The temporary deal was necessitated after Cambridge’s regular number one, Jake Eastwood, received his marching orders during Saturday’s comprehensive 4-0 triumph over Notts County for handling the ball outside his penalty area. Ben Hughes stepped in and delivered an impressive performance on his full league debut, but manager Neil Harris deemed it too risky to rely on the young goalkeeper in such an important match.

“To ask him to go again in such a pivotal game would have been a real big ask for him and a real huge gamble,” Harris explained to the BBC.

Recognising the need for a more experienced goalkeeper, the club successfully negotiated Walton’s arrival. Harris expressed gratitude to Preston manager Paul Heckingbottom for facilitating the loan, highlighting Walton’s substantial experience, which includes significant play in Scotland.

“Jack comes with a high pedigree, a lot of football played — not so much in the last few months, but some football played in the first half of the season, and a hell of a lot of football played in the last few years up in Scotland,” Harris noted. He added that Walton was eager to join and adapt quickly to the responsibilities at Cambridge.

Walton joined Preston during the summer from Luton Town and has already made five appearances for the Championship club this campaign. He may debut for Cambridge at Hayes Lane on Thursday, where the stakes are high as Bromley could secure promotion to League One for the first time in their history with a win.

Meanwhile, Cambridge is determined to make an immediate return to the third tier following last season’s relegation. The club will also look to utilise Walton in upcoming home matches against Grimsby on April 21 and Barrow four days later, setting the stage for what could become a defining stretch of the season.

The narrative around Walton’s signing underlines the fragile nature of roster management at this level, where teams must navigate injuries and suspensions with swift strategic decisions. Should he find form, Walton could be the key to unlocking a pathway back to success for Cambridge United.
