Reform UK pledges crackdown on illegal workers
Reform has vowed to shut down large businesses that fail to pay fines for employing illegal workers as part of a significant immigration crackdown, reports BritPanorama.
The party plans to introduce a new ‘Deliveroo Law,’ imposing fines of 10 per cent of global turnover on corporations that hire illegal workers. This initiative aims to deter illegal employment and bolster compliance among businesses.
Under these proposals, senior executives could face prison sentences of up to five years. Zia Yusuf, Reform’s Home Affairs spokesperson, stated that companies refusing to pay fines associated with hiring illegal migrants would risk being “dissolved.” He emphasized that consequences should align with those imposed for failing to pay taxes.
Yusuf criticized corporate leaders profiting from illegal labour, arguing that such practices disadvantage British workers, particularly the youth. He described the proposed reforms as establishing the “toughest penalties anywhere in the world” to combat illegal employment practices.
In his remarks, he highlighted existing laws in immigration that are not enforced, suggesting that effective measures can significantly impact this issue. Reform proposes to redirect the fines collected from offending businesses towards supporting victims of migrant crime and revitalizing struggling high streets.
In a bid to galvanize public engagement, the party also intends to launch a Turkish Barber tip line, which will encourage individuals to report suspected illicit employment on Britain’s streets. Police forces will be required to investigate every report received.
Addressing the responsibility of the delivery service sector, Yusuf referenced Deliveroo as a case study, where compliance measures are already stringent. A spokesperson for Deliveroo reiterated their commitment to combating illegal working and acknowledged the need for industry-wide cooperation in this effort.
