Chelsea loan Alejandro Garnacho to Aston Villa
Chelsea has reached an agreement with Aston Villa to loan Alejandro Garnacho until the conclusion of the season, with an obligation to buy, reports BritPanorama.
The 22-year-old Argentinian international has undergone a medical examination in Birmingham and has secured personal terms for a four-year contract at Villa Park, contingent on the deal becoming a permanent transfer.
While specific conditions regarding the obligation to purchase have not been disclosed by either club, it is believed these will relate to appearances made throughout the loan period. Chelsea appears optimistic that the criteria will be met, enabling them to recoup the £43 million asking price for Garnacho, who was previously acquired from Manchester United for £40 million just last September.
Manchester United is set to receive ten percent of any future transfer fee. Garnacho’s tenure at Stamford Bridge has thus far been underwhelming, featuring only one Premier League goal during the entire season. Overall, he netted eight goals and provided four assists across 43 matches in all competitions, though the circumstances of those contributions have been uneven.
Notably, apart from a brace against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup, most of his goals came against lower-tier teams such as Qarabag, Wrexham, and Port Vale. His solitary league strike encapsulates a period that failed to build any significant momentum.
This move follows Chelsea’s recent £117 million acquisition of Morgan Rogers from Villa, which set a new British transfer record. With Rogers’ arrival and the signing of Sporting winger Geovany Quenda, Chelsea found it necessary to reduce squad numbers, making Garnacho expendable despite his recent signing.
For Aston Villa, Garnacho will be their fourth summer signing, following Johan Manzambi, Joao Gomes, and Modou Keba Cisse. The club has been active on the selling front as well, generating close to £200 million from player sales, which has provided them with significant financial resources to reshape their squad ahead of the upcoming campaign.
Garnacho has faced growing criticism from sections of the Chelsea fanbase for perceived lapses in work rate off the ball. Despite the unceremonious exit, there seems to be no animosity between the player and the club, as Chelsea aims to streamline their roster.
