Aston Villa reach Europa League final after convincing win over Nottingham Forest

Aston Villa have reached the Europa League final after beating Nottingham Forest 4-0 with heroics from their skipper, John McGinn, winning 4-1 on aggregate, reports BritPanorama.

The Scotsman scored twice in three minutes to kill off the contest after an initial strike from Ollie Watkins and a spot-kick by Emi Buendia, who was a star on the night.

Unai Emery’s team will play German side Freiburg in the final, after they advanced past SC Braga, 4-3 on aggregate. The electric atmosphere at Villa Park was palpable, with even Prince William jumping out of his seat during the match.

Captain McGinn nearly created an excellent opportunity in the opening three minutes, floating in a lovely delivery towards Ezri Konsa, but the Englishman could not quite get on the end of it. On the other end, Omari Hutchinson nearly pulled Forest ahead with a fizzing left-footed effort just over the top of Emi Martinez’s bar. Pau Torres then nearly put the Villains in front, seeing his looping header tipped over by Stefan Ortega.

Villa continued to pile on the pressure, with Buendia having a free kick from close range blocked over the top of the Forest goal. Watkins then picked up a nasty head injury, requiring bandaging but was able to continue. Past the half-hour mark, Youri Tielemans had a chance but shot wide from distance.

The Forest backline was eventually broken as Buendia danced past Jair Cunha and Elliot Anderson, assisting Watkins for a tap-in from close range. Villa’s supporters erupted in celebration as the home side established a lead for the first time in the contest.

Watkins nearly scored again shortly after, striking towards the bottom right corner, but it was well saved. In the second half, after a VAR check, a penalty was awarded to Villa when Pau Torres was pulled down by Nikola Milenkovic. Buendia converted the spot-kick into the bottom left corner, marking Villa’s lead securely.

As the match progressed, Villa’s dominance was apparent. Morgan Rogers came close for Forest with a strike on the edge of the box, and Chris Wood squandered a golden opportunity, being denied by Martinez. With 13 minutes to play, McGinn wrapped up the tie, smashing past Ortega into the bottom left corner. Villa’s star player then scored again just three minutes later with a stunning finish into the bottom right corner.

Villa saw out the contest to secure a 4-1 aggregate victory and will head to Istanbul later this month for their first major European final in 44 years. This achievement is particularly significant for the club and its supporters, reflecting both a return to form on the European stage and the potential for future successes.
