Kelly Cates issues on-air apology after Nathan Collins’ expletive

Sky Sports presenter Kelly Cates issued an on-air apology on Saturday evening following an unexpected expletive from Brentford centre-back Nathan Collins during a post-match interview. This incident occurred after Brentford’s emphatic 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the Gtech Community Stadium, reports BritPanorama.

Collins was visibly emotional as he spoke about the match, which left Tottenham under the scrutiny of their manager, Roberto De Zerbi. The Irish defender declared, “It’s the start we wanted. We want to start brightly, we want to start sharp, we want to f***ing – sorry – we want to show what we are made of and we did that today.”

Cates responded swiftly to the slip, maintaining her professionalism as the broadcast returned to the studio. She addressed the language on air, apologising to viewers while acknowledging the heightened emotions surrounding the match.

Fellow pundit Jamie Redknapp seized upon the light-hearted moment, referencing a similar instance involving ex-Manchester City player Micah Richards, prompting Cates to respond with a reminder to keep the focus on the match.

The game was dominated by Brentford, who took control early on with Keane Lewis-Potter scoring within the first 12 minutes. Vitaly Janelt added a second before half-time, and Michael Kayode put the result beyond doubt shortly after the interval. Tottenham struggled to mount any significant response throughout the encounter, with Igor Thiago missing a penalty in a further blow to their efforts.

Brentford will next face Birmingham in the EFL Cup second round on Tuesday, followed by a trip to Leeds United. Tottenham, seeking to bounce back, will host Charlton in the cup on Wednesday before facing Newcastle at home on 29 August.
