Arne Slot's strategy backfires as Liverpool salvages draw against Sunderland with late equalizer

Liverpool held by Sunderland in Premier League draw

Arne Slot’s gamble to leave Mohamed Salah on the bench for the second consecutive week appeared to fail as Liverpool drew with in-form Sunderland. Florian Wirtz’s dancing feet helped to rescue a point for Liverpool, but he was denied a first Premier League goal after his deflected strike went down as a Nordi Mukiele own goal, reports BritPanorama.

The German international waltzed past a couple of defenders before firing home via a deflection nine minutes from time to make it 1-1 and spare head coach Arne Slot more scrutiny. This decision marked the first time Salah had been left out of consecutive league matches during his tenure at Liverpool.

Sunderland seemed poised to secure a first win at Anfield in 42 years through Chemsdine Talbi’s long-range effort in the 67th minute, with former Black Cats striker Kevin Phillips celebrating alongside fans in the away end. However, Wirtz, who has been increasingly impressive, managed to level the match.

Despite a £116 million price tag, Wirtz has quickly become one of the more impactful summer signings. In contrast, Alexander Isak, the British record signing, struggled to find his rhythm. His early effort was met with derision from the away fans, raising questions about his ability to replace Salah, who at 33 may be facing the inevitable decline associated with age.

Interestingly, Salah’s impending departure for the African Cup of Nations could relieve Slot of a difficult selection dilemma. First-half chances for Sunderland included a shot from Trai Hume that slipped through Alisson Becker’s fingers and onto the crossbar, highlighting Liverpool’s defensive vulnerabilities early in the match.

It wasn’t until shortly before the break that Liverpool truly tested Black Cats goalkeeper Robin Roefs with a swerving shot from Dominik Szoboszlai and a subsequent header from Alexis Mac Allister, neither of which found the net. Slot’s team faced further challenges in the second half, leading to Wirtz’s crucial intervention that ultimately saved the day for Liverpool.

The match served as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of football, where even tactical decisions can lead to unexpected results. The narrative continues to unfold as Liverpool seeks to stabilize its form while navigating the intricacies of team selection and player fitness.
